Special Events and Themed Weeks

Dyslexia Awareness Week 2024

To help us achieve our goal of a dyslexia-friendly society, we work hard to raise awareness of dyslexia and to challenge common misconceptions. Mrs Ives, Our SENDCo (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator) spoke to us all in assembly about what Dyslexia is and what people with Dyslexia can find challenging with their learning.

Black History Month - 2024

What is Black History Month?Charity Digital - Topics - How charities are celebrating ...

In the UK, Black History Month is a time for reflection and positive changes for the future. During Black History Month, people can celebrate the outstanding contributions that Black and Mixed Heritage people have made to society across the globe, both today and historically. Black History Month originated in the United States of America, but it's now a global event.

What is the theme for this year?

This year, the theme of Black History Month in the UK is reclaiming narratives. The theme of reclaiming narratives focuses on sharing stories of Black history and culture, as well as correcting historical inaccuracies.
This includes less well-known and untold stories, as well as stories about famous historical figures. Listening to these stories, and learning about historical figures and their achievements, can inspire the younger generation to dream big.

At Potton Primary School, we will be celebrating Black History Month with special assemblies, sharing stories written by black authors and also learning about Black History Month in our history lessons.

Anti-Bullying Week 2024

Anti-Bullying Week 2024 is coordinated in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by the Anti-Bullying Alliance. Anti-Bullying Week 2024 will take place from Monday 11th - Friday 15th November, with the theme: Choose Respect. Odd Socks Day is taking place on Tuesday 12th November, with adults and children being encouraged to wear odd socks to celebrate what makes us all unique.

Choose Respect Cover

The theme of Choose Respect has come about following consultation with teachers and pupils by the Anti-Bullying Alliance which coordinates Anti-Bullying Week every year in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Teachers and children wanted a theme that empowered them to do something positive to counter the harm and hurt that bullying causes.

Following the success of the campaign in 2023 – when 80% of schools marked the week, reaching over 7.5 million children and young people – this year, we’ll empower children and young people to choose respect.

Our call to action:

From playgrounds to parliament, our homes to our phones, this Anti-Bullying Week let's 'Choose Respect' and bring an end to bullying which negatively impacts millions of young lives.

This year, we’ll empower children and young people to not resort to bullying, even when we disagree and remind adults to lead by example, online and offline.

Imagine a world where respect and kindness thrives — it’s not just a dream, it's in the choices we make. Join us this Anti-Bullying Week and commit to 'Choose Respect'. What will you choose?
